Tattoos, Baldness, and PJ Pants

I’ve slowly been making this public, but I am transitioning out of the Marine Corps this year. That means a lot of changes for me and the family. There are three things I really, really want to do when I get out that seem a bit contradictory to the average person.

I want a tattoo or two.

I want to shave my head bald.

I want to wear PJ pants to the store (and walk through the grass in them).

Yes. If you’ve not spent over a decade as a female Marine Corps officer, these may seem weird. They may even seem weird for some of my peers, but I know a few have to have similar feelings, right?

Let me explain…

Yes, lots of Marines have tattoos. Most civilians don’t know that tattoos can actually get you banned from joining the military due to location, size, or content. I spent time doing many a tattoo waiver while on recruiting duty in Louisiana. I could have gotten them while in, but then you have to do paperwork and yadda yadda and it didn’t seem like it was worth it.

Graycie loves belly and face tattoos. My Post Malone JR.

Truthfully I’ve wanted to get tattoos since my dad and sisters’ deaths in 2008, but I am thankful that I didn’t because I am not particular fond of what I wanted to get. My husband also HATES tattoos. Like has been adamantly against them forever. He’s not happy about this pursuit, but he is semi-supportive of it now, so I need to do it before he changes his mind 😂

My sister has some amazing tattoos. I’ve ordered some temp ones so I can try them out in different locations and see what I like best. I’m excited!!

I still haven’t made up my mind on what I’m going to get, but leaning toward oxytocin molecule, serotonin molecule, Orion constellation, pine tree and mountain, something okinawan, a combination of those, or all of them. No idea 🤷‍♀️

Yes. I want to shave my head bald. Many people assume one of the first things I want to do is grow my hair out and wear it down all the time. FALSE! I hate my hair down. I also hate hair pins and bun holes and braiding. I can do bald…I just need some sweet hats, scarves, and dangly earrings. I’ve heard it is freeing and I’m looking forward to trying it at least once!

PJ Pants

This is the weirdest one to me, but also a bucket list item. I need to walk into a store and shop in pajama pants. Yep. I’ve spent college and career ensuring I wore “appropriate civilian attire” anywhere outside of the house. This won’t be a normal thing, just a one-time trip in comfy pants. I’ll even plan to walk through some grass on the way to the store and look around intently for a SgtMaj to jump out and yell at me for walking on the grass.

Anything you’ve done or will do when in a professional/personal transition point?

Love others. Love self. Love coffee.

  1. My finacee doesn’t like tattoos, either. I got my one giant tattoo after I left the Navy and then met him years later. He says that one is “me” and he doesn’t think of it as a tattoo, but he’s never been fond of them. Which, because of who I am as a person, makes me want to get a full sleeve. I miiiiiight get another, but not sure yet.

  2. Ha! I feel ya…I’ve been thinking about getting a bunch too mainly because I keep being told he’d rather me not 😂 I’m suppressing that urge though lol

  3. As a former chemistry teacher, the idea of having molecules tattooed on you is pretty appealing. Not gonna lie! 🙂 When I was teaching, I can remember high school girls wearing PJ pants to class. Now that I am retired, I alternate between sweat pants and leggings. Wearing jeans is dressing up for me!

    1. I’ve seen some really neat molecule tattoos! I do love my jeans and plan to get into farming, so jeans will definitely be the standard…I just gotta do the PJ pants once so I feel like a rebel 😂

  4. I love the name of your blog, even though I believe coffee is poison. It’s the cowbell that I like so much. And I also like your sister’s unicorn tattoo. You can’t go wrong with unicorns. Good luck with your transition to civilianhood.

    1. Thank you! I love that tattoo too. A little too bold for me, but I do think about one day being able to get something so colorful!

Just a little bit of poison at a time is ok though, right?

      1. With just a little bit of poison, you’ve probably developed resistance. I don’t really know if coffee is poison, but I like to joke about it, since I don’t drink it.
